Landscape Architecture is
about people and their action on and interaction with the man made
and natural environment which is their surroundings and the
setting for their activities. It is about the design of change,
the search for elegant solutions to problems that takes in
everything from aesthetic considerations to science and
management.
MTLA provides wide ranging services in all landscape matters. With over 30
years experience working on behalf of a wide range of national and
international clients underlying it, the practice seeks to provide unique
solutions which go much further than simply expressing the character of
designers.
The problem is not deciding what to do with pieces of land; it is
deciding how to arrange the existing land – to imagine and create a new
landscape pattern on an existing landscape.
Its approach to master planning and design for example is firmly rooted in
revealing the character of a site by fully understanding its development over
time, whether as a result of natural or man-made processes or, as is usually
the case, both. It then seeks to understand how the site is currently valued
and on what basis before considering its potential for change.
In terms of design, whilst individual buildings, engineering structures
and landscapes have the power to inspire and impress, it is the art of making
places that leaves a far greater and longer lasting legacy, and has more
profound effects.
The MTLA approach seeks always to develop a process which connects the
historic and current context with an imaginative future thus creating a
distinctive place particular to site, client, user and other interested
parties requirements and aspirations. This approach builds good working
relationships, ensures that key issues are identified and addressed, and
options assessed in developing practical and imaginative solutions
sensitive to context. Each project is a new situation and deserves a
new solution.
MTLA also works closely with a number of related specialist firms in the
fields of planning, ecology, arboriculture, archaeology, hydrology, forestry,
engineering and architecture. Among others, these include the landscape
architects, Horner+Maclennan, Carol Anderson and Vanessa Stephen and the
computer graphics consultancy Envision, co-founded in 1999 with Dr Ian McAulay
and chaired by Mark Turnbull which provides computer mapping, research, GIS,
visualisation, photomontage and compter graphics services.
MTLA is thus able to provide complete solutions on any scale and at any
level of specialisation.
It is not just what you deliver, but how good you are at delivering it,
which brings success.
