Mark Turnbull founded MTLA in 1999, up until that time Mark was Principal of Turnbull Jeffrey, Partnership Landscape Architects which he founded in 1982, 8 years after his return from consulting, teaching and lecturing in the USA. From 1999 to 2001 he was Chairman of Turnbull Jeffrey Partnership Limited. He is a Chartered Landscape Architect, Architect and IT Professional. He is a Fellow of the Landscape Institute and a Fellow of the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland and a Member of the British Computer Society.

His professional experience is extensive including architecture, urban design, landscape architecture and landscape visual and environmental assessment and research. He has particular experience in master planning, co-ordinating large scale land use planning, feasibility and environmental studies and in developing design approaches for specific emerging issues. These emerging issues have included: Fitting Roads: a Balanced Approach to Rural Roads Design; Cost Effective Landscape: Learning from Nature; Road furniture in the Countryside; Siting and Design Guidance for buildings in the Western Isles and Routing Guidance for Overhead Electricity Lines. He also provides specialist guidance of the fitting of buildings and structures into their settings as well as appearing as an expert witness where appropriate.

He is a former member of the Royal Fine Art Commission for Scotland, the Countryside Commission for Scotland and the Landscape Institute Technical and Environment Committee He was also Chairman of the Edinburgh Green Belt Initiative, and Vice Chairman of The Edinburgh Greenbelt Trust . He is currently a Director of the Edinburgh Green Belt Trust, a corresponding member of the Landscape Institute Technical and Environment Committee and Chairman of Envision.

Mark’s reputation, based on a lifetime’s involvement in some of the most significant landscape policies and projects in Scotland, is of a dedicated, committed and authoritative professional with great clarity of thought, ability to work with people and to manage the process of achieving practical solutions to complex problems allied with imagination and technical skill.
